Joined mishiDance in 2011
Jonathan Matthews-Guzmán has been performing with mishiDance since 2011 and has also composed music for the company. They hold a BFA in dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, additionally completing a minor in music. They have since joined a variety of troupes, including Darrah Carr Dance, Valerie Green / Dance Entropy, Emily Craver & The Little Streams, ChristinaNoel & The Creature (for which they are the company’s Rehearsal Director), and This is Not a Theatre Company (for which they are the company’s choreographer). In 2017 they and Holly Sass co-founded BREAKTIME, a performance duo that has participated in residencies at Chez Bushwick, Gallim Dance, and Franklin Chthonics. Jonathan’s work and studies have taken them abroad to Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, Springboard Danse Montréal, The International Theatre Festival of Kerala, and Toscana Dance HUB, where they studied accompaniment for dance with Robert Boston. A collaborative musician, they play for technique classes at their alma mater as well as mentoring Tisch Dance’s pedagogy students on musical collaboration. They have music directed for the Medicine Show Theatre and Queens Shakespeare, Inc., and twice a year you can try to spot them among the singers of the Cecilia Chorus of NY at Carnegie Hall. When not performing, Jonathan is writing for such journals as Eye On Dance and the Arts, The Dance Enthusiast, The Journal of Dance Education, Time Out NY, and Dance Magazine. An avid teacher of children, licensed in yoga pedagogy through the Perri Institute for Mind and Body, Jonathan seeks to share multidisciplinary study through physical practice. |
